The essence of the yoga practice in the Quotations of Immortal Danyang is nothing more than “calming the fluctuation of the mind”.
Whether it is practicing postures, pranayama or meditation, it is nothing more than interpreting this classic sentence from the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali.
At the beginning, we can’t stop thinking.
We start from the practice of postures and pranayama.
The way to start is not to control thinking directly to stop, but to focus on one place.
That is to say, asanas and pranayama practice “concentration”, which is the sixth branch of Ashtanga.
Where to focus? Focusing inward is the fifth branch of Ashtanga.
What do you focus on inward? The first recommendation is to focus on breathing.
Pay attention to the relaxation, comfort, fullness and naturalness of breathing.
There are not so many rules and details in postures.
Proper adjustment of postures is just to make breathing more comfortable.
If your mind is full of such ideas or rules as “whether the posture is correct” and “whether the posture is correct”, it is easy to lose the comfort of breathing.
As long as the comfort of breathing is lost, the posture is wrong.
As long as the breath is comfortable, then the posture is in alignment with your current physical state and ability.
Learning so many details of asana alignment, which seems to be useful knowledge, may actually become a shackle to the mind in practice, a killer of breath, a consumer of energy, and a tool for obsession and greed to control the mind.
Adherence to the depth, details and order of asanas is an outward quest.
This is the manifestation of greed and obsession, which violates the definition of yoga: “yoga is to calm the fluctuations of the mind”.
The practice of flowing postures makes people fall into the trap of chasing external postures and neglect the care of breath.
I summarized a lot of breathing patterns.
A few days ago, I excessively pursued the integrity of the breathing pattern.
As a result, it became an outward pursuit, which caused excessive consumption in practice.
The summary of my practice is that we must take good care of the smooth and comfortable breathing.
All details and states are gradually revealed by themselves, rather than can be pursued.
Take good care of your breath, follow your body’s feelings, and let your body’s wisdom guide the practice of asana, rather than let your mind’s thinking override your body’s feelings.
The more the mind pursues, the more the heart fluctuates, the more it is consumed, and the more confused it is; Take good care of your breath.
You will become more and more focused, your mind will become more and more calm, and your body will become more and more relaxed, smooth, and stable.
Then all skills, details, and knowledge will slowly emerge by themselves.
This is thinking is forgetting.
Meditation is performed in asanas and pranayama.
When you find a state of concentration, you will naturally want to meditate when your mind is calm and your body is unblocked.
There are many ways to meditate.
You can observe the eyebrow center, guard the elixir field, and observe the breath.
There are many ways, but you only need to focus on one.
Gradually, concentration will melt away, leaving only the pure observer, which is meditation.
That is, if the heart dies, the God will live, and this observer is God.
The attention to the body disappears, the body melts, and the innate qi slowly wakes up and starts to swim by itself.
This is called qi transport when your body is weak.
In the past, we recommended Ashtangayoga, the weather line workshop of the 2022 [November Jinan] [December Nanjing] Ashtangayoga Yoga Week, as a necessary textbook: the textbook from Master Gregor Maehle [the best], Master A Tang, who has more than 40 years of “experience in boiling soup”, talks about&practices and uncovers secrets.
