Why should yoga start from the “right side”?

Why does the teacher always ask us to start from the right side when we are not doing yoga on the yoga road, or paying attention to yoga on the yoga road? Today, let’s analyze why we started from the right side from the perspective of energy, tradition, history and science.

In yoga and flow yoga of energy, the energy of the body is called Prana.

This energy is visualized as two snakes winding around the spine (as shown in the figure below), which are full of the whole body and mainly concentrated on the spine.

The energy represented by these two snakes is called left vein and right vein respectively, and the wound one in the middle is called middle vein.

This balance of yin and yang is the Sanskrit “Hatha”, that is, hatha, which we call hatha yoga.

“Ha” represents the sun or positive energy, and “Tha” represents the moon or negative energy.

The goal of yoga is to achieve the balance between yin and yang.

The balance of positive (male) and negative (female) energy not only has the concept of “yin and yang” in Indian yoga, but also has yin and yang in many Chinese philosophies, traditional Chinese medicine and Taiji.

The basic concept is called left yin and right yang.

Why does yoga start from the right side, that is, from the positive energy? The answer is simple: this is tradition.

It does not mean that the positive energy is better, but the balance between yin and yang is the best state.

The tradition of starting from the right In Indian tradition, when you enter a new home, your first step is to take your right foot.

When giving gifts to others, use your right hand.

I am used to using my right hand when I eat and shake hands.

From a scientific point of view, we start from the right side when twisting, because the internal organs of the abdomen, especially the digestive system, work clockwise.

Twisting from the right side is conducive to the peristalsis of the digestive products, allowing them to wriggle from the transverse colon to the descending colon, and finally discharge.

When you get up from the Corpse Pose, turn to the right side first, because the heart is on the left side, and turn to the right side to distribute blood evenly by gravity.

When we move the right limb, the left brain is active, and this part is the management part.

That is to say, our practice starts with reason, and then turns to the right brain of sensibility, creativity, quietness and meditation.

If these answers are not enough, simply remember that this is tradition.

In fact, no matter which side you start from, you should remember to do both sides to achieve balance.
