Those who check yoga knowledge and practice Astonga Yoga every day know that yoga practice will be suspended every month at the new moon and full moon, except for the physiological period.
Why? Why can’t you practice Astonga at the new moon and full moon? When the moon is between the sun and the earth, we call it the new moon.
In the language of yoga, Tamas Guna is in the leading position at this time, and the energy of destruction is very active.
Nature is full of lazy, heavy and inert energy.
In Mysore Astonga yoga practice, the energy generated by the victory breathing method (Ujai breathing) and Vinyasa is controlled by Bandhas.
On the new moon day, because of the decrease of energy, we are easy to be injured because of the difficulty in maintaining the flow of energy during practice, so we do not practice Astonga Yoga on the new moon day.
When the earth is between the sun and the moon, we call it the full moon.
Both the sun and the moon try to pull the earth to their respective sides.
On this day, because Rajas Guna is in an advantageous position, the energy of the whole nature is at the highest peak and everything is in an unstable state.
Our psychological and physical activities are also very active on this day.
We will feel extremely excited and self-conscious than usual.
On this day, it is difficult for us to concentrate and perceive what we are doing.
On the full moon, the ego will force us to act beyond our physical limits.
There is no doubt that this state is also very easy to hurt us in practice, and I think that this day is not practice.
Because we are a part of nature, we should abide by the rules of nature.
If we violate the rules of nature, it will cause damage.
Nature teaches us how to love everything and our body.
Precautions for practicing Astonga Yoga during menstruation Menstruation is considered to be a period of strength and wisdom within the body in various cultures in ancient times.
During this period, women will be free from their daily activities and engage in some spiritual exploration.
From the perspective of etymology, the words menstruation, month and moon are all interrelated.
They illustrate the link between women’s menstrual cycle and the moon’s cycle.
The monthly menstrual cycle plays an important role in the construction of society, and the month becomes the time structure for arranging various activities.
Astonga yoga creates space for us to pay attention to this rest time in yoga practice.
Astonga Yoga practitioners call the menstrual period “Ladi’s holiday” (female holiday).
For women, the menstrual period means the time to rest during yoga practice.
Guruji of Astanga Yoga – Sri K.
Pattabhi Jois once said that the blood flowing out during menstruation is “unclean”.
Although this may sound strange and even offend some people, it has recently been found that before the menstrual period, the liver and kidney release toxic excreta, which are discharged from the body through the blood flowing out of the menstrual period.
This monthly “detoxification behavior” in a sense explains why women tend to live longer than men.
Through regular Ashtanga yoga practice, menstruation will become more efficient – short time and large displacement, lasting only two to three days.
This is often consistent with the full moon (the first day of the lunar calendar) or the new moon (the fifteenth day of the lunar calendar), and the rhythm of daily yoga exercises is rarely interrupted.
Women have different reactions to menstruation.
Some women rarely feel uncomfortable and will continue to practice during menstruation as usual, while other women feel stagflation and sinking, lack of energy, or will feel severe menstrual pain.
It becomes especially difficult to keep practicing.
Guruji suggested stopping the exercise for three days, and extending the time if the bleeding continues.
Menstrual yoga practice also varies from person to person.
If you are a diligent yoga asana practitioner (practicing six times a week), you can use this period of time to rest, breathe and meditate without doing yoga asana practice.
It is better to stop practicing Astonga Yoga for a few days, because when practicing Astonga Yoga, you need to bring two Bandha, of which Mula Mandha’s “perineal or anal constriction” will affect excretion.
We don’t want excretion to be blocked these days.
It is said that some people have experienced menopause due to menstrual practice.
For those women who do not feel uncomfortable during menstruation and do not practice frequently at ordinary times, they can continue to practice other types of yoga, just pay attention to avoid some movements.
For example, reverse body movements, such as downward dog pose and Astonga Yoga ending series (where the pelvis is higher than the heart), should be resolutely avoided, because the effect of gravity will be contrary to the flow of menstruation.
One theory is that these actions will cause amenorrhea, and another is that the flow of impure blood to the heart during menstruation is harmful to the body.
If you feel uncomfortable during your menstrual period, you should rest, treat your body well and dedicate this time to yourself.
